A shooting fatality was reported on 68th Ave. in Scotlandville Saturday afternoon involving three people, two of which were LSU athletes.
One person was found fatally shot in the backseat of a truck and police have detained the other two people who were in front of the vehicle for questioning, said Baton Rouge police spokesman Sgt. L’Jean McKneely.
McKneely said the two taken for questioning were the LSU student-athletes and were unharmed.
Sources confirmed that LSU football players RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire and walk-on Jared Small were the athletes taken in for questioning.
After the shooting, the two athletes called 911 and waited at the scene for police to arrive.
The shooting happened on the 2900 block of 68th Avenue just after noon and police continue to question neighbors and other witnesses as the shooting remains under investigation, said McKneely.
The Baton Rouge Police Department said the two athletes cooperated and were released without charges. Authorities are investigating if actions were in self defense.
Coach Ed Orgeron says the shooting "is a legal matter that's been taken care of." Both Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Jared Small have also received counseling.
Coach Oregeron says both Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Jared Small are prepared to play in the Fiesta Bowl on January 1st.
