On March 23, 2020, the International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound released a statement saying that the 2020 Games in Tokyo will be postponed, most likely until the summer of 2021.
Pound told USA Today, “On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided."
With other sporting leagues decreasing the number of games and audience numbers, the IOC has come under great pressure to postpone the Games, which are currently scheduled to begin July 24 and end Aug. 9.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, athletes around the world have called for a delay with training programs.
Postponing the 2020 Games has been an ongoing decision due to the total number of global COVID-19 cases surpassing 300,000, including almost 13,000 fatalities.
The U.S. has the third-highest number of cases following China and Italy, and more countries are reporting deaths due to coronavirus.
