LSU Color Guard has been a tradition for more than 46 years.

This year in particular, the team made a major adjustment that might have come as a surprise to many fans, adding a male to the all girl team.

Daniel Mincey is a freshman at LSU and describes himself to be, “pretty simplistic, straightforward, kind of goofy just a little bit, not too much though.”

Mincey happens to be one of the first males to join the LSU Guard team.

The Associate Director of Bands, Dennis Llińas says, “It’s been a long time coming. You know, males have been a part of color guard for decades already, and it’s kind of astonishing to me that we did not have one in the band sooner.”

There has not been a male on the LSU guard team since the rifle line back in 1987. Until Mincey auditioned in April 2018.

“We finally had Daniel audition, and he’s spectacular," Llińas said. "So, it’s about time we are going to get with the times because every other color guard in the world has one. And more important to us, he is a good human being, he is good at performing, and he belongs in this organization.”

Mincey says that he used to be a part of a guard team where it was generally accepted to have males on the team, and it was not taken as such a big deal when males did audition.

“But coming here traditionally guys don’t really try out for it," Mincey said. "It was scary just a little bit, because I didn’t know if they were going to accept me.”

After tons of encouragement, Mincey did decide to audition. He says that it was his high school dance teacher, Mrs. Thomas, that really drove him to do it.

“She was like, ‘you got this, you can do this, go try out. If they don’t let you try out I’ll riot’," Mincey said.

Mincey came to LSU knowing nobody, but since then he has truely found his place here.

“And what I will remember the most is when the new girls, we all formed a circle and just played games. And it was just team bonding," Mincey said after recounting his favorite memory since joining the team.

Fans can expect to see Mincey and the rest of the team performing on the field during pregame and halftime performances with the LSU band.

The last chance for fans to see Mincey and the rest of the color guard team perform this year will be Saturday November 17, 2018 during the LSU vs. Rice game.
