More LSU students have had encounters with danger, as a recent car ride almost turned into a tragedy.

The BRPD has arrested an Uber driver for kicking down the door of an LSU student after driving them to their off-campus apartment. Jose Cruz Fernandez is a 48-year-old rideshare driver who was jailed on April 14th, one week after the incident.

10 minutes after dropping the student off at their apartment on Ben Hur Road, he began banging on their door, subsequently kicking it down and entering the room. He immediately left upon seeing that the passenger’s roommate was also home.

Uber confirmed to WAFB that Fernandez was deactivated from their platform and they are working with the police on the ongoing investigation.

For many students, LSU has felt like an unsafe environment for a long time.

"As an LSU student, and more specifically a young woman," freshman Morgan Cook says, "I do not feel very safe on campus late at night, especially because I have an on-campus job."

Students should report any suspicious rideshare encounters to the LSU Police at 225-578-3231.
