The Arc of East Ascension Parish's "Dancing with a Cause" fundraiser lets participants put their TikTok skills toward a charitable fund.
The nonprofit organization’s event has gone virtual this year to ensure its citizens with intellectual and developmental disabilities continue to receive the support they need.
Participants were asked to “think TikTok” when creating their dance clips, but the event welcomed videos from everything ranging from sing-alongs to mime enactments.
Sharon Morris, The Arc’s public relations and marketing director, had the inspiration to make the virtual transition.
“We sort of changed the name from Dancing for a Cause to Dancing for a Cause Virtual 2020 with a Twist, and the reason why we’re saying ‘with a twist’ is because we got more than just dance groups in the virtual experience,” explains Morris.
Although the video submission deadline has passed, the event is in need of voters to select a winning participant. However, rallying voters is difficult with quarantine, and transitioning the event took a great deal of work.
“It was very challenging because everybody’s use to the big event where they can come to this big reception and all of the food and drinks and the socializing and the networking,” Morris says. “I had to really, really sell this one.”
The voting registration can be found on the Baton Rouge Parents Magazine’s website from Oct 5 through Oct 31. A minimum donation of ten dollars is required.
The Arc can also be contacted through their website for more information on internships, donations and volunteer work.
