If you were planning on spending your Mardi Gras break in NOLA bar-hopping, think again.
New Orleans mayor LaToya Cantrell held a press conference today announcing that all bars will be closed Feb. 12 through Mardi Gras Day. Cantrell made this decision after large crowds flooded Bourbon Street and the French Quarter last weekend.
Cantrell defended her extreme decision by saying she would rather be accused of doing too much than too little.
She felt that this decision is necessary to keep the city safe. She fears that the holiday could become a super spreader event without these precautions.
These rules mainly affect the bars. Restaurants are allowed to stay open but are forbidden from serving to-go cups. She ensured that there will be a heavy police presence patrolling the area with checkpoints to get to major streets.
