Matherne’s Market is currently dealing with a major theft problem, but the items being stolen are not what you think they are.
The store is currently missing over 175 shopping carts.
Residents at Nicholson Gateway Apartments have been taking the carts back to their rooms and not returning them.
Store managers have been trying to combat this issue by placing signs around the store and requiring students to leave their ID if they wish to take the carts outside.
Matherne’s Market manager Ashley Evans says that custodians and resident assistants are bringing out the carts they find, but students will take them back to their rooms.
“We’ll see them throughout the building. People usually leave them by the trash rooms and everything,” Evans said. “Then, it’s up to the RAs and the cleaning ladies to put them down. They’ll put them out in the courtyard, to where eventually we can go and pick them all up.”
The carts can cost almost $200 to replace, so managers hope to get them all back to prevent unnecessary spending.
